Reunion Days Decisions

We have had an undercurrent of conversation regarding how we'll spend the days of the reunion.

Our bonfire is out due to the conditions on the coast won't allow it. We have decided to use the day volunteering our time to help improve the conditions on the coast.

You can read our discussions in the comments to this post. Please make your own comments or if you want me to post a comment for you email me surayborn@hotmail.com.

A report on the progress of the next reunion..

I feel the picnic will happen without much effort.

As for us committing a day of the reunion volunteering, there are many reputable groups who already know the ropes of helping folks get back into their homes that we can join.

Finding a place to enjoy music... I called BlowFly Inn, they are still in business - operating out of the Holiday Inn on HWY 49. They say they plan to rebuild but it will probably be a year before they can move back to their bay property.

The Saegner Theater is closed for restoration efforts. The theater will be brought back to its original beauty. The grand reopening won't happen until November 25th.

Lynn Meadows Discovery Center is closed, the crew of 20+ reduced to 4.
They had 5 foot of water in all of the buildings. Repairs are ongoing. They are hoping to have the grounds in good enough shape to have a jazz fest in May.
The lady I talked with said they have no guarrantees that they will be able
to pull it off. She couldn't give me any answer regarding whether we will be able to use the grounds in September and to check back closer to May.

Jay, how much time will you need to pull things together regarding other entertainers?
Should I see if we could use the CP grounds for a concert?

I am looking for input from all of you.

love SuSu

I must have miss something I don't remember the volunteer part not that it's
a problem. My suggestion is CPCC related. First find out all the older CPCC
homeowners in the community and evaluate needs required for each. Some may
may-not have had any assistance and with a small group of people would
greatly appreciate any assistance provided. I'm not sure you'll be able to
get too many travelers from far-away to particpate but it a wonderful idea.
If you haven't notice it's really a small group of people who do the actual
work @ these reunions. Others enjoy with the minimum of physical
particpation.
The entertainment doesn't pose to much of a problem.....Jay can fireup
acostically anytime and with power anything can happen. Scheduling seems to
be my main concern. Normally it's fri-nite bonefire,sat-day picnic which
leaves sunday to volunteer or is there a change? Maybe an early morning
volunteer Saterday finishing up at the picnic. The Sunday-nite drinking
party is the only problem I can see. How are the conditions on the coast???
Just about any business would welcome our group, I think. Have the dates
been set for Labor Day weekend again?? Georgia schools have gone to a new
system and kids start school in August. Keep me informed and I'll assist as
much as I can..from this distance. please pick a date though so I can
arrange off-time. Hugs, Peter

Subject: Re: vol.

Sorry Pete, I had left you and Jay out of the loop with the volunteer day.
I have mentioned it to a few, who have responded positively pro giving aid.

I like the idea of checking out who needs help in the neighborhood, but I
would like to give my reasons with volunteering our help to established
groups.

There are so many people still living in tents and FEMA trailors merely
because insurance isn't giving them enough funds to make their battered
homes livable. Groups from all over the US have been coming in, cleaning
out the debris and repairing these structures and making these homes
livable. This is one of those situations where what goes round comes round.
My brother Greg and Big Joe Tramuata have benefitted from these strangers
coming in to help. I am sure there are more from our old neighborhood who
are also thankful for these folks.

Now my reasoning with going with one of these established groups -
They have the experience to get the most accomplished from an unorganized
bunch.
They have the equipment and supplies on hand.
They have the means to see to it that a home is finished, in other words, if
we have only a day to give help, they insure that there are others to come
in to finish the job.

No one in CP is without a home, but there maybe relatives who need help to
get back into their home. I would like to make these people a priority, but
organizing the work, acquiring the supplies, and not being able to guarantee
that the job will be finished makes me hesitant to work independently of an
established system. I think it would be much better that we get the word out
to our folks about the established systems so they may benefit from the
extra help.

These are my thoughts, - I appreciate Pete's feedback and would like to hear
other's thoughts.

Last reunion, we had pretty much decided the bonfire might be eliminated due
to the fact that it has been rained out twice which left only a few to
insure burn-out and clean-up. So, I was thinking we'd use Friday as the
volunteer day. - Thoughts?

Jay had talked of pulling together a concert with some well-known
entertainers. How is that going?
This could happen either Saturday or Sunday. If it is a outdoor concert, we
could have the picnic the same day.? or could be instead of our bar night?

This year - Labor Day weekend? Considering the conditions on the coast, a
less visited holiday would be better than the 4th of July.

One issue with having a CP volunteer day is that we really won't know what to do till the time comes. Six more months is a long time in post-Katrina terms. But do we even have to know what needs doing? As the day approaches, the actual volunteer activity could take shape, perhaps. Perhaps we could tackle a few miles of beachfront and clean up debris...or head out to the bayou or the woods near Tuxachanie for a similar endeavor.

In other words, I think most people and their homes will be well on the road to recovery by then and the environment will still need assistance...we would just need to pick an area and get the word out to the Sun Herald, etc.

As far as music, without a venue (either for a concert or a club setting) it wouldn't be financially viable to bring in name performers. I'm not ruling it out but it is much harder to pull together without a guarantee, contract, funds, adequate seating, stage/sound/lights, etc. When we settle on the activity schedule I can revisit this :-). How about St. James auditorium? I did a show there once for the kids/nuns and it was a good experience. I think the room seats a couple hundred at least...

Y'all have a nice weekend!

What if We
concentrate cleaning and improving CP instead of the coast in general? One
bite at a time,Show all the folks that are new to our hood that they may
become CPer
's also.P

Cleaning CP would be a doable project. Compared to the rest of our home city, CP is pristine.

I was telling Dixie, that the majority of the undeveloped areas are in a diasterous state. Boats, Refrigerators, insulation in treetops, household and business debris in the marshes. We are talking about needing heavy equipment and wouldn't make a dent in a day.

Does anyone know anyone who like to volunteer a dozer and dumptruck?

From Paul Lyons

I'm sorry for not being more in touch with the conditions there. What if We focus on zones near our hood. From Kramer bayou to coast,Or the most hazardous zone for the coast overall.I bet Rielly knows which zones would be most in need.

From Peter OConnor

Now we're getting somewhere. While I agree volunteering is a wonderful endeaver
pullingtogether people from around the country to "clean-up" will not be an
acceptible reason to come. mind you previous event were generated for the
thought of have fun and seeing ole friends but this instigates physical labor
and down rite work being accomplished. Please consider the "group" mentallity on
this on. Any guess on participation?I have and being generious I'd say 30-40% at
best. if your looking venu that the only one to consider is the collussem. If
Jay can get em' than use even one of the smaller rooms there. If it's a benefit
it may be 'free". Just a thought. Jud wants to use the computer for noggin so
I'm not allow to finish my thought. be back with more soon. Hugs..Peter

From Juanita Newsome,

Thanks for the email about the reunuion. I don't have a grill, etc because I had downsized before I moved to Pearl River. I will bring a dish for sure and give Lidia $15 for the fee when she is here for the reunion. I want to attend the reunion with my new husband for everyone to meet. Hope you can make it to the wedding.
I think we should work for Habit for Humanity or whatever project the committee chooses for that day. We could get newspaper coverage for that and maybe that will help others to learn of the reunion for next time. The best part is it might help someone who is in real need. My fiance' lost everything, but thank God he has been able to rebuild and we hope to sell it to pay for the house we have bought together. We live in Woolmarket, just off Ole Woolmarket Rd near the firestation and St Mary's. Come visit----but after the wedding please. I have my hands full for the moment. Ha!

Sue,
Thanks for the eCard. I always enjoy getting them.
As to the College Park Reunion...the Francis X. Collins Fitness Center survived the storm, as did all of College Park (the man who built it sure knew some stuff!).
As for the bonfire...the beach should be in decent shape by Labor Day.
As for local bars...JimBob's survived the storm.
As for a concert...the nearby Lynn Meadows Discovery Center has a grandstand, however I don't what shape it's in.
As for golf...Terry moved to Orlando, but Mark is still here.
Any more questions? I'll be glad to help if I can.

Hi, just a couple of ideas on places that might could be used for a
bar/hangout/concert:

Lookout Restr. that used to be on the beach is in the old Robby's Seafood
building on Hwy 49 and called Lookout 49. I've been told there is a pretty
good sized bar upstairs that occasionally has bands.

There is a new place on the opposite side of 49 called Slippery NIck's ( I
think). I ate lunch there one day and it reminded a little of the old
Spiders, has a little spot for a band and a game room (The only combo bar
and car wash on the coast)!

Bad idea: Boone's Tavern is back open. Maybe by the fall Jim Bob's will
reopen - they don't look that damaged from the outside.
